Were you one of the 111 million people watching the Super Bowl Sunday night? Did you see that commercial starring Clint Eastwood that everyone is talking about? Last year Chrysler ran ads about “Detroit is back” with singer Eminem. This year Chrysler brought in “Dirty Harry” to give America a pep talk!
I personally felt the commercial was awesome! The spirit that Chrysler displayed in that two minute advertisement is the same spirit that we want to convey with MadeInDaytonBLOG.com… get ready, we're coming on strong!
Chrysler dealer Matt Erwin of Erwin Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Troy, Ohio had this to say: “ We are so proud that Chrysler had a positive spin on their commercial. Starting last year with the 'Imported from Detroit' commercials, Chrysler has said that the resurgence has started and we're ready”. He continued, “We have great products and a company that backs their products with a positive message of hope for the future”.
If you haven't seen it yet, watch the video below and then share your thoughts in the comments section. I'm interested to know, do you think that it's halftime in America?
Here’s the complete script:
"It’s halftime. Both teams are in their locker room discussing what they can do to win this game in the second half.
It’s halftime in America, too. People are out of work and they’re hurting. And they’re all wondering what they’re going to do to make a comeback. And we’re all scared, because this isn’t a game.
The people of Detroit know a little something about this. They almost lost everything. But we all pulled together, now Motor City is fighting again.
I’ve seen a lot of tough eras, a lot of downturns in my life. And, times when we didn’t understand each other. It seems like we’ve lost our heart at times. When the fog of division, discord, and blame made it hard to see what lies ahead.
But after those trials, we all rallied around what was right, and acted as one. Because that’s what we do. We find a way through tough times, and if we can’t find a way, then we’ll make one.
All that matters now is what’s ahead. How do we come from behind? How do we come together? And, how do we win?
Detroit’s showing us it can be done. And, what’s true about them is true about all of us.
This country can’t be knocked out with one punch. We get right back up again and when we do the world is going to hear the roar of our engines.
Yeah, it’s halftime America. And, our second half is about to begin."

I think he is right on. We are positive people with a positive attitude and we positively will come back!
ReplyDeleteThought it was a well done piece. The kind that grabbed my attention through its entirety. I understand now there is a good deal of controversy surrounding it. I must see things too simply. I took it for what it was.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch football but I did see this commercial. He is right, we will survive and make a comeback just like Detroit is doing. We are a country that is known for being creative under stress and hard times.
ReplyDeleteIt is great that Chrysler and GM are making a come back that is great for Detroit and the Dayton Area. Too bad the Federal Goverment had to bail them out and we tax payers will never get paid back in full by either of them. That is $25 billion dollars. I am sure that the govermetn will bail me out. I send a letter and ask.
ReplyDeleteYou're wrong. Bailout funds have already been paid back. Given that the alternative was bankruptcy, the auto bailout was an unqualified success!!
DeleteSteve:
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting the entire text of the spot. It's an inspirational read, and also shows that no particular company was mentioned by name, as has been reported in the conservative media. I still can't understand the controversy. The auto bailouts were first proposed BEFORE the 2008 presidential election. I'd hate to think of the mess we'd be in if the auto industry had failed and 1.25 million more jobs had been lost, not to mention billions in personal income. It wouldn't be halftime. It would be more like 4th and long.
I was impressed by the "Halftime in America" commercial, as I was the year before with the Eminem spot. It's hard not to feel a connection between Detroit and Dayton, with the thousands of automotive related jobs that have left our area. I do believe it's "Hafltime in America", even more so for those of us in the midwest. Thanks for the post, Steve.
ReplyDeleteGreat to see the pride in American Made!
ReplyDeleteI absolutley loved it! Sums up my feelings exactly. I hope it gets more people thinking.
ReplyDeleteObama propaganda!
ReplyDeleteIf only there were somone to write "America" the check like the folks in Detroit got to get their "second chance." While we are glad to have the manufacturing back, the fact that we the taxpayers were so generous to enable the Automakers "special handling" through Bankruptcy to protect certain voting interests is somehow missing in this paean to Halftime and pride in what "detroit" has "accomplished."
ReplyDeleteI hope that it gets people thinking too. Thinking about "the people of Detroit know something about this, we all pulled together ..." That's a pretty generous revision of what I remember. Yes Lets think. Who will bail out America? like America bailed out Detroit. Clint's grandchildren? Our's ?
"Detroit's showing us how it can be done"? Hmmm, Take lots of Money from the government, default on supplier contracts and banks and bondholders through specially managed bankruptcy? Sounds good. Who can we default on? Who will give us money? What special court will help us achieve the splendid recovery that Detroit has modelled?
"All that matters is what's ahead?" Really? I'll contribute some critical thinking: How about values? Do they matter? How about a respect for law and property and bondholders?
"Detroits showing us it can be done"? Seriously?!?!
As Dramatic film it gets a 4 star rating from me. Also I'd give it five stars for Hypocrisy, Historical Revisionism and Propaganda.
Eastwood claims it was not political
ReplyDeleteI agree with Miles Free 100%
ReplyDeleteAmerica needs a lot more than just some rev up commercial. We wont see any substantial improvement until we regain our manufacturing base and do away with our dependency on foreign oil.
Just look at all the containers of products that enter the US on a daly bases, not hard to figure out why we are in the shape were in today.
I would say God Bless America, but He helps those who help themselves.
Ironic that an inspirational message of what is right with this country is aired during a game which exemplifies what is wrong with this country.
ReplyDeleteThose involved in the game will make more in an hour than most of us can hope to make in at least part of our lifetime. Many of those watching paid more for that "privilege" than those workers in Detroit will make in months, maybe years. The money which is helping bring Detroit back was not handed to the folks shown in the commercial. We were "allowed" to give 25 billion dollars of OUR money to people who we don't even know their names. Instead of 111 million people watching a game maybe we should be watching where our hard earned money is going.
It is a shame this message, which was inspirational and well delivered, had to be associated with some of the things that hold us back from again being the leaders of the world.
This was sent to me
ReplyDeleteway to good.

I liked the commericial ,but was disappointed that it turned out to be a Chrysler ad. It would have been great for encouragement to stand up for what you believe in, get involved, something like that.
